Located in the Twin Cities, the university occupies over 1,150 acres of land within Minneapolis and St. Paul. The campus stretches across these two major cities commonly known as the twin cities. The University of Minnesota neighborhood is divided by the Mississippi River, and this makes it the only neighborhood in Minneapolis that is located on both sides of the river.
The neighborhood is comprised of two portions based on their location from the Mississippi River. There is the west bank and the east bank. The west bank is bordered by 1st St on the north, 19th Ave. on the west, 4thSt on the south, and the Mississippi River to the east. The east bank is bordered by Mississippi River to the west and south, Oak St to the eat, and the north boundary running along 11th Ave, 15th Ave, and the railroad tracks near 8th St.
